The effort to capture meaningful moments in time can be elusive. Some events seem to transcend space and time, whereas the attempt to memorialize them does not do justice to their significance. Monuments themselves are ironic because they take on a meaning of their own beyond what they initially were built to remember.

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot (tabernacles) attempts to draw out this paradox — erecting temporary monuments to recall Israel’s journey through the wilderness. These Los Angeles artists offer their personal monuments emerging from times of pain, survival, and faith.

How do we memorialize these fleeting yet significant moments in our journey?

(Featuring original artwork by: Cora Doran, Jake Rosen, Johnny Huerta, Julia Wolinsky, Kevin Newton, Maxwell Huang, Micah Hickerson, Sandra Curitore, Shannon Kim, and Sophia Han)
